CAFOD
Lent calendar 6 March

As a child, Lawrencia worked to help her mother by cleaning fish and setting the fire to smoke them.

Do not forget the things your eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your heart all the days of your life; rather, tell them to your children and to your children’s children.

Deuteronomy 4:9

Moses teaches the people the laws and customs as he has received them from God and encourages them to pass these down to the next generation.

In Liberia, children learn from a young age to help out in the family. Lawrencia Baidoo worked on a fishing project supported by CAFOD. She grew up in the area, and so she understands the local people and their way of life.

“My mother used to dry fish and sell it. If you’re smoking fish, you need help because the work is very hard. My mother needed someone to help her wash fish and set the fire. I did all of this. In West Point, a lot of people include their children in everything so that they learn.

“I used to push a wheelbarrow. I’d go to the market and buy milk, biscuits, sugar, soup. I’d pack it into my wheelbarrow… then I’d go around selling these things to make money. I’d make a profit and save.”

Lawrencia used the money to pay her school fees and to help fund her university studies.

In the fishing project, she worked with the women in the community who clean, store and sell fish. Thanks to the training from Lawrencia, they increased their profits and saved for their children’s school fees.

Let us do what we can this Lent to ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn and to flourish.
